A Christmas Carol

A Christmas carol has been around for decades. It was originally published on December 1843. And the original title for Charles Dickens book 'A Christmas Carol' was 'A Christmas Carol. In Prose. Being a Ghost Story of Christmas'. Dickens was influenced by the experiences of his own youth and by the Christmas stories of the other authors including Washington Irving and Douglas Jerrold.

A Christmas Carol (1984):

We watched the a Christmas Carol from 1984, and we had to analyse the film to get some ideas for the Christmas show. For example we had analyse the props, costume, special effects, lighting and etc. At the end of the film, we came as a group and had a group production meeting with the ideas each individually came up with and tried to put together each of our ideas.

Anna gave me and Sephora an idea to create these decorations for the Panto Performance. These decorations were used during the Victorian times. And we started to use different coloured paper to create a Christmas ornament decoration. By creating these you have to fold these as a Chinese fan then put these all together and they have to be colour coordinated to match the colour or roughly the same colour texture.

Anna showed us how to create brick effect to put the display but after me, Sephora and Vadim created some of these bricks after Anna showed us step by step. Making the texture, we used water, plaster, saw dust, sand then mix with PVA glue afterwards dilute some thick PVA glue. Then, you apply the texture on the material and create the bricks and thoroughly, you can't apply all in once because it would mess up the design and to create these you use a hard old paint brush or your fingers.

Victorian Christmas

During the Victorian times, the Christmas times were different from the 70's and Modern times. Victorian times were really dull and they didn't have much colour decoration and the Victorian decorations seemed simple but dull. They had homemade ornaments or sewed an ornament to hang up on the tree that they would decorate. As the clothing during the Victorian times was fundamentally different. But changed over the years, as they would wear formal clothing but upper class, middle class and lower class would wear different type of clothing fabric. I mainly focused on the upper class for Christmas project because I thought it would not be much of a challenge and I've learnt about the Victorian's before and I have fairly enough knowledge to recreate the Victorian Christmas with my knowledge and research.

70's Christmas

The 70's Christmas fundamentally changed from the 1800's - 1901 from the Victorian times. As the Victorian theme has shown mostly dull and not as vibrant as the 70's. However the 70's shows vibrant, retro and disco vibe colour theme. The 70's Christmas has shown that   the decorations are all red and green and much enlarged decorations. The 70's Christmas tree are fundamentally from the picture of the Victorian I have chosen from my research because the Victorian tree is much bigger than the image I have chosen for the 70's Christmas tree. Furthermore, I have chosen to recreate the 70's Christmas period of time because I have done some research on the 70's and having some knowledge. Searching for 70's decorations were easy to find in charity shops or being able to create homemade 70's ornaments and having an idea of creating weren't hard because it's easy to find vibrant colours in DIY stores.

Modern Christmas

Thoroughly, from the Victorian times to the 70's onward now to modern day has completely changed. The Christmas decorations in the modern period is simpler because you can create a white Christmas or a traditional Christmas. Therefore, this shows that there are so many ideas to create a modern Christmas and it's easier because we live in the modern time period.

Noted: The tradition is still the same but the decorations for Victorian times, 70's and modern Christmas are all fundamentally changed over the years.

Costumes: The Victorian era, 70's era and Modern era:

These images show different type of costumes of each period of time, such as Victorians, 70's and modern. And these costumes are apart of my project for a Christmas Carol and as me and colleagues thoroughly went through these costumes in the costume department, together we organised each different period of time of the costume on a pile of the period of time that we thought as a team that belonged in which pile. Besides, the costumes me and my colleagues also organised props that were need in each period of time pile such as; candles, covers, plates, clocks and etc. This was very important that as a team we organised these as a team so we could start working on our projects afterwards, as I chose to do the 70's time period as I knew what I needed to do such as; props, table essentials, costume and etc.

Evaluation

Briefly, this unit showed me beneficial educational things such as Anna taught me how to make a DIY bricks in the workshop which definitely caught my eye as I have never saw this before which is another technique that I have learnt in the workshop and I will take this take this for my preferences. I also learnt and understood the different time period that Christmas has changed and alongside with my research, such as Victorian time period time doesn't have many decorations  sticking with the original theme, but the 70's has many decorations also sticking with the original theme and modern time period has changed fundamentally over the years because nowadays the theme isn't original Christmas theme, there are many options such as white Christmas, black Christmas or grey Christmas. And I think the modern Christmas stands out more because of the time that has changed and there are options which is good to explore different colours for Christmas, but this project was good as learning the differences and comparing also similarities too.
